Bacteria closes Falls Lake beaches again
RALEIGH, N.C. — Recreational swimming areas at Holly Point North Beach at Falls Lake were reopened Friday after tests showed normal levels of bacteria in the water.

Wake County Environmental Services closed the beach on Tuesday after routine tests showed elevated levels of enterococci, bacteria that can cause infections and lead to diarrhea. Enterococci is typically found in the digestive tracts and feces of warm-blooded animals.

The county samples bacteria levels in the water each week during the summer and closes the beach to "primary contact," or any activity where someone's head may go underwater, when bacteria exceed acceptable levels. Tests must show acceptable levels of bacteria for two straight days before the beach can be reopened to swimmers.
