Falling tree smashes Franklin school bus

Bunn, N.C. — In what State Highway Patrol troopers called a "freak accident," a large oak tree fell onto the engine compartment of a school bus in Franklin County early Friday.
None of the 20 or so students on board were injured, but officials said the driver was treated for an injured wrist.
The tree landed on the bus shortly after 7 a.m. on N.C. Highway 98 about three miles west of Bunn, Highway Patrol officials said.
"You wouldn't expect to be driving down the road and a tree just fall across the road, but (the driver) was attentive enough that she saw the tree falling and attempted to brake," Franklin County Schools spokesman Tommy Piper said. "She did a great job."
The bus, which was taking children to Bunn High School, was significantly damaged.
