RALEIGH, N.C. — A former Chatham County teacher pleaded guilty Tuesday to sexual exploitation charges based on child pornography that was found on his computer.

Jason Garant Perkins, 39, of 504 Sutter Gate Lane in Morrisville, who taught at the Woods Charter School in northern Chatham County, pleaded guilty to 10 counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. He was sentenced to 16 to 20 months in prison, which was suspended to 20 days in jail, and was placed on supervised probation for five years.

He also must register as a sex offender, complete a state program for sex offenders and consent to random searches of his computers.

Perkins resigned from his teaching position last spring after a State Bureau of Investigation probe found digital images of children in explicit poses on his home computer hard drive. According to court documents, the photos depicted a girl engaged in sex acts alone and with a man.

An SBI source told WRAL News that Perkins came under investigation after he solicited an undercover officer online in February.

Perkins taught middle and high school students at Woods Charter School. He also previously taught in the school systems of Wake, Cumberland and Carteret counties, authorities said.
