Ex-teacher faces child sex charge from 1992

Posted March 16, 2010

— A former Wayne County teacher was arrested Monday and charged with sexually assaulting a juvenile 18 years ago, police said.

Richard Allen Pate, 62, of 117 Hines Drive, was charged with statutory sex offense and taking indecent liberties with a minor. He was being held Tuesday in the Wayne County Jail under a $500,000 secured bond.

A police report was filed last month, alleging that Pate sexually assaulted a juvenile in August 1992. Pate was a teacher at Eastern Wayne Middle School at the time, but the alleged victim wasn't a student at the school, police said.

No other details of the case were released.

On the WITN website it says the victim was a 15 year old boy, it happened at the boys home and he was not a student at the school Mr. Pate taught at.

"no matter what he is accused of why did it take 18 years to bring charges"

for some of you this could be a experience you would need to go through yourself and see or maybe just be there as a friend for another young girl who was a victim of assualt/rape, if that is the case here. Personally and sadly, i know first hand. Trust me, this is something that will change your life when you love this innocent and scared girl.

Geesh! It sure took a long time for the person that was assualted to figure out something bad had happened.

Isn't there a statute of limitations any more. What he is alleged to have done is wrong, but being arrested 18 years later?

There are a lot of teachers who sort of disappear from the scene, and this is what is behind a lot of their releases - nice and quiet, don't upset parents, etc. But it's there.

He taught at the school my mom taught at. He was let go in the 1990's because some of this stuff was found out. Was working one day, gone the next. Not sure why charges are just being brought up now but he resigned his position of teaching way back then b/c of some of this stuff.

prayin4tr, Im so sorry to hear that. I hope everything is ok now.. I hope if this did really happen to this woman, she can work through it too.

I know him and he would not do such. Hope all will be well for him
You can never say what a person would or would not do. Im sure ppl thought my grandfather wouldnt do anything like this either but he did and he did it to me. Maybe it took so long because the victim was afraid no one would believe her or maybe she was just afraid period. To this day no one in my family knows what dear old grandad did and He died before I felt strong enough to confront him
