HOPE MILLS, N.C. — A former assistant track and cross country coach at South View High School has been charged with having sex with a student, authorities said Friday.

Matthew Aaron Holmes, 27, of Hicks Avenue in Fayetteville, was charged with six felony counts of sexual activity with a student. He was being held in the Cumberland County jail under a $150,000 bond.

A former South View High track team member, who is now 20, told investigators last week that she and Holmes had sex several times off campus between Nov. 2, 2015, and Feb. 13, 2016, authorities said.

"This person is supposed to be a mentor to these kids, but I think he's too close in age, and they're more friends than they are mentors, and things like this take place," said Sean Swain, a spokesman for the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

Holmes coached at South View High during the 2014-15 and 2016-17 school years, but he resigned on March 6, said Ruben Reyes, associate superintendent for human resources for Cumberland County Schools. Holmes also was a a substitute teacher at the school from Dec. 8, 2015, until last week, when he was removed from the substitute list, Reyes said.
