Ex-Rocky Mount teacher found not guilty of sex with student

Posted July 14, 2009

— A former Rocky Mount High School teacher was found not guilty Tuesday of charges she had sex with a student.

Kelly Bartz, 40, of Lafayette Avenue in Rocky Mount, was charged with sexual activity with a student by a teacher. The charge stems from an incident that was alleged to have occurred on June 20, 2008, with a boy who was 17 at the time, police said.

Bartz resigned as an English teacher at Rocky Mount High on June 30, according to a spokeswoman for Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools. She had worked for the district since 1997.

Sounds like she was found not guilty because of the time that the male withdrew from school..... so he was not a student. Gee - what kind of damage can you do to an 18 year old male by having sex with them?

I doubt very seriously that a 17 or 18 year old guy, had to be "manipulated" into having sex with "any" female!!! He just took advantage of his opportunity, just like any other male would do!!!

I am glad to know that she was found not guilty, but I need some more juice, WRAL. What facts led to the decisions? What led to the allegations? Tell it...

Let it go people. She was found not guilty. She may have been involved with this young man, but when is it a crime for 2 adults to have sex? It doesn't matter that she 22 years older than he is. Whose business is that anyway? As for scaring him and taking his innocence away, I doubt he was innocent from the beginning. Come on people, he was 18. I'd bet she's not the first female he's had sex with. Did that ever occur to anyone? Most likely he's had it before, knew it was good and was "Hot for Teacher". The Rocky Mount paper stated he was 18 and not her student at the time.

Shes guilty of supplying students with cigarettes and her husband is guilty of supplying students that were babysitting for them, alcohol. Teenage girls were given alcohol by a police officer and thier teacher....WRONG!

I love the hypocritical ones among us who a week ago were falling all over themselves to let us know Mr. Jackson was found not guilty of child molestation. You are the same people who were out there rallying for a convicted thief just a week ago. Yet the same people want to turn this not guilty verdict around and say its meaningless. If the verdict is meaningless then why bother to have a trial? This woman was found not guilty. Those of you who wish to turn the verdict around now need to get off you soap box and accept the verdict as is. She was found not guilty! That means she is not guilty in the eyes of the law. There are no footnotes to the verdict. It is what it is. Or shall we place an inscription on Mr. Jackson's tombstone that says, "Here lies a man found not guilty of child molestation even though we all know he really did it." You can't have it both ways. The verdict means something or it doesn't. If it doesn't then there is no reason to ever hold another trial.

Once again fine detective work by RMPD. did not have enough to charge the teacher, much less get a conviction. 2007, detectives botched a homicide investigation that led to release of a murder (now wanted for drug trafficking in another state). 4-5 years a serial killer going after prostitutes (no mention of this in articles, but all have records).
Maybe the chief should have spent more time training officers and picking good detectives instead of sleeping with trainees.
