Ex-NCSU professor charged with embezzlement
A North Carolina State University professor resigned Tuesday, one day before he was charged with stealing from three student groups he advised, officials said.

Charles Scott Whisnant, 57, of 1013 Flanders St. in Garner, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of embezzlement.
Whisnant was an associate professor in the Department of Animal Science.
The treasurer of the Animal Science Club tipped N.C. State auditors off to discrepancies in the club's bank statements on Jan. 14, and University Police began investigating five days later, officials said.
The investigation expanded to Alpha Zeta Agriculture Honors Fraternity, the agriculture honors society, and the Agri-Life Council, an umbrella organization of recognized student groups in the College of Agriculture of Life Sciences.
Authorities allege that Whisnant withdrew in excess of $65,000 for personal use from the organizations’ accounts over the last year.
Almost all of the organizations’ funds come from fundraising activities by student members.
