Ex-Fuquay-Varina girl's basketball coach faces sex charges

Posted April 21, 2010

— A former Wake County coach and teacher was indicted Tuesday on charges that he had inappropriate sexual conduct with a student.

A grand jury indicted Mardy Lee Cutchin, 37, of 1104 Squire Ridge Drive in Fuquay-Varina, on three counts of sexual offense with a student.

Cutchin was suspended Feb. 11 and later terminated from his positions as coach of the girl's basketball team at Fuquay-Varina High School and a physical education teacher at Fuquay-Varina Middle School.

Fuquay-Varina police say that Cutchin engaged in sexual activity with a 16-year-old student at the high school. Prosecutors said last month that Cutchin sent the student 4,000 text messages saying that he was "obsessing" about her.

According to search warrants, detectives seized two cell phones, a laptop, desktop computer and rifle from his home in February.

Cutchin is married, has children and has worked for three school systems, according to his lawyer, Bill Young.

If this were a woman teacher she would be treated differently than this guy.

Seems there are no morals anymore.

    We have a winner!!!

IMO the principals need to hold staff meetings from time to time and remind their teachers that the students are off limits.

anyone. Obviously she must have thought the attention was cool.

Wow the student let 4000 text messages go by without telling anyone. Obviously she must have thought the attention was cool.

stefan - I think it also depends on the age difference. If the girl is 16 and its her boyfriend who is 18/19 then it would seem ok. But I am no lawyer or LEO so I do not know the fine lines and grey areas. But what I do know is if you are employed by the school system legally there can be no engagement.

S-mom - Understood...So if he were just a "regular Joe" and this happened, then no charges would have been no charges? I always thought the age of consent was 18 in the US..16 seems a little young...

It's pretty sad that most high school kids I have talked with don't even think that oral sex is sex. It is not a "special" moment between two people that care for one another anymore it seems. It is everywhere in the entertainment business, music, tv, videos. It isn't taboo anymore. Seems there are no morals anymore.

  • LovinMyLife Apr 21, 2010

stefan - because when you are employed by the school system you ar enot to engage with students.

I am not saying that I think this is right BUT, the age of consent in NC is 16..So why does he get hooked up on a sex offense?
