— The former band director at Southern High School was placed on probation Wednesday after pleading guilty to having sex with two students.

Jamal Butler, 31, of Calibre Park Drive in Durham, pleaded guilty to two counts of a sex act with a student by a teacher and was placed on probation for three years.

Butler was charged in February 2009 after an investigation by police and Durham Public Schools revealed that he had relationships with two girls at the school, both of whom were 16 or older at the time, between July 2008 and January 2009.

Butler resigned his position at Southern High about a week before his arrest.

Even if a teenager flirts with an adult, I doubt she (or he if that's the case) fully understands all the outcomes.

Given the age difference, I would have to say he will probably work his way down!!

The parents of the students need to be addressed. Parents of one of the students not only approved of the relationship, they encouraged it. They thought of him as a great catch for their daughter; someone with a stable job, and someone who could treat their daughter right- until he started shacking up with another student and they realized what was really happening. As someone had many discussions with both the student and the parents, I was appalled that there was nothing that could be done to the parents to force them to force this relationship to stop. These parents knew and condoned the relationship, that's unacceptable.

Did anyone notice how quickly WRAL put story way down the local news list. Guess they didn't like the comments with his picture up there.

Are you people trying to start something? haha

I am not condoning what he did but before people start calling him a rapist etc maybe they should read the article again. The teens where 16 and older. The article doesn't state their actual age. He pled guilty to being a teacher and having sex with a student. It does not say the students said he raped them. For all any of you know they were 18 or 19 year old seniors. As I said, I don't condone what he did but to label him a rapist etc is just wrong. They were of age to consent legally in this state and apparently they did since he was not charged with assault or rape etc!

This boy is a preditor & I bet he is finding girls that have problems at home, he could be drugging them, there could number of things that happen. Know one knows. He could have even threated the girl. Some kids were never tought to be strong, they could have abusive parents, or whatever. There could be so many things that happen. But this boy is sick.

This is sad that we have rapist in schools. They really need to make an example out of this boy, he is sick in the head.
