Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday and there are several opportunities for families to mark the day, which most kids have off from school.

Here's what's scheduled (please share if you know of more):

  • Volunteers will be fanning out across the Triangle to help others as part of the United Way of the Greater Triangle's Day of Service. Read my earlier post for details. There are volunteer opportunities for all ages, including a searchable database so you can pick family-friendly opportunities.
  • Several groups are working together to hold a birthday parties for King at 10:30 a.m. and noon, Monday, at Northgate Mall. The event includes freedom songs, an ice cream social, music and more. Read my earlier post for details.
  • In Cary, there are many ways to mark the day with events all weekend. They include an MLK Jr. Dreamfest Celebration at 3 p.m., Saturday, at the Cary Arts Center. This year is the 50th anniversary of the desegregation of Cary High School. The event includes a special video presentation and discussion about the event in Cary. For kids, there will be activities during the presentation and discussion. The event ends with a reception and musical tribute to King.
  • In Raleigh, there will be a march at 11 a.m. through downtown, along with an ecumenical service and concert at the Progress Energy Center for Performing Arts.
  • And Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh, which usually is closed on Mondays, will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., this Monday. The museum will celebrate community heroes, bringing in local heroes such as a firefighter, police officer and paramedic. Museum guests also can help pack food for Backpack Buddies to feed children in need from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
