— A Tuesday night event in Durham hoped to launch dozens of students into scouting.

W.G. Pearson Elementary School teamed up with local Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for a rocket launch event.

The scouts built the rockets and gave several dozen students the opportunity to send them off into space.

Event organizer Eva Lee said the purpose of the event was to encourage children and their parents to become involved in the Boy Scouts.

James Schooler, who joined the organization more than 60 years ago, said the skills he learned as a Boy Scout were invaluable.

“Some of them were useful for lifetime hobbies, others were useful for lifetime skills and my appreciation for what I got out of that encouraged me to try to do that for boys coming along later,” he said.

Several parents in attendance at the event showed interest in getting their children involved in scouting.

Scouting is the best youth organization available to boys/young men. So glad I found it many years ago and have participated now as an adult leader
