— The success of a Garner teen on "American Idol" has been a boon to his hometown Mayor Ronnie Williams said Monday.

Scotty McCreery, 17, a student at Garner Magnet High School, advanced last week to the top 11 in this season's singing contest with a performance of  "For Once in My Life" by Stevie Wonder.

McCreery's "Idol" journey began last year when he auditioned in Milwaukee singing Josh Turner's "Your Man" and Travis Tritt's "Put Some Drive in Your Country."

Williams said McCreery's success has put Garner in the spotlight. Last week he told a crowd, "Scotty McCreery is sort of like our unofficial economic development ambassador.

"He continues to bring that positive spotlight on Garner," Williams said.

McCreery and the other Idol contestants will perform music by Elton John Wednesday at 8 p.m. on FOX 50.

This young man is a GREAT SINGER....I encourage everyone to VOTE for him....I think it is going to BE THE NEXT AMERICAN IDOL...

Alfred E. "Neuman" was the dopey "what me worry kid" on the cover of "Madd" magazine; that's my point.

Alfred E Newman, ran for President and took some areas of the USA, So whats your point?

I think he's great! It takes a lot of talent to get to the top 10 and I think he deserves to be there! He has my vote...every week. If he doesn't make it as American Idol, he will definitely make it in the industry. I don't even know him...and I'm proud of him for working hard to get to the top. Congratulations Scotty!!! We need more 17 year olds with your ambition and drive!

The kid has one sound, and that sound is a direct imitation; he sounds like Josh and looks like Alfred E. Neuman. His entire act (or lack thereof) is repesentative of the severe lack of talent associated with "American Idle."

Hank Sr. was not a looker, but could sing and coo the Ladies, And Willie ,Blue eyes crying,, I think the Kid is great,,,
Whats wrong with country? Small towns, Hicksville,
    A country boy can survive

This kid has a great voice, and I think if he loses, he will still have contracts offered. He has much more talent than Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift and a lot more that are out there today doing what THEY call singing. Sounds more like stuck pigs to me.

You're forgetting about the gazillion teenage girls voting. He'll be in the top 3.
    Common Sense Man

He'd have to be good looking for the teenage girls...Justin Beiber he is not! LOL

He sounds like a one trick pony to me. Great voice, but basically a Josh Turner impersonator. Maybe if there was a Country Idol he would be good, but he's no AMERICAN Idol.
