Garner teen makes it to 'Idol' tour

Posted March 24, 2011

— Scotty McCreery, of Garner, has made it to the "American Idol" tour.

America voted the 17-year-old Garner Magnet High School student to the top 11 after his performance Wednesday night of "For Once in My Life" by Stevie Wonder.

As a top 11 finalist, McCreery will be featured on the "American Idol" tour, which travels across the country this summer.

The show typically brings the top 10 singers on tour, but the judges opted to save singer Casey Abrams from elimination on Thursday night. Their decision added Abrams to the tour.

McCreery's "Idol" journey began last year when he auditioned in Milwaukee singing Josh Turner's "Your Man" and Travis Tritt's "Put Some Drive in Your Country."

Another singer with a spot on the tour with a Triangle connection is Naima Adedap, of Chicago, who performed with the Burning Coal Theatre Company in Raleigh this past December.

"Winning 'American Idol' would be great, but just to get into the industry and to be a part of the music industry and be in Nashville and sing with the greats – that's a dream," McCreery said during an interview with WRAL News last month.

Some posts here remind me of some out there who regularly rake the WRAL weather team over the coals, too.

Would really like to tell you haters what I think, but then I'd be doing the same thing you are. So if you can live with yourself, I guess you'll just have to.

Didn't he play the banjo in Deliverance?

Hard to do when someone isn't born yet. ;)

He does kind of look like that kid in Deliverance. The fact is, he may be a great kid, but this contest is about talent. He sounds like a million other country singers, trying to sound like a million other country singers, and with all of those facial distortions and that weird "eyeball rollin'" thing he does, he looks goofier than Gomer Pyle.

Hey ya'll, it's still me and I'm still a'sanging jest like 'ole Josh Turner, 'cept I'm a'doin' it bunches better'en he ever did. Ya'll keep on a'votin' and I'll keep on makin' dem funny face distortions and a'rollin' my eyes like I'm a'gigglin' at something nearly funny.

I am amazed (although I guess I should not be) at all the negative comments about these kids reaching for their goals. They could be the ones on the streets causing trouble, but instead decided that they are worth something. I hope they all succeed!!!
