"American Idol" finalist Anoop Desai met with fans in his hometown of Chapel Hill Sunday and will receive the key to the city Monday.

The Chapel Hill-Orange County Visitors Bureau says that Desai met fans from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Franklin Hotel, 341 W. Franklin St.

The town and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill have declared Monday "Anoop Day" in honor of the former UNC graduate student.

Desai's friends, family and school officials will speak at a public reception at the Carolina Club on campus from 5:30 to 7 p.m. After that Desai will go to Town Hall, where he will receive the key to the city.

The 22-year-old Desai was voted off "American Idol" April 22. He had gotten mixed reviews for his rendition of Donna Summer's "Dim All the Lights" during the show's "Disco Week."

Desai recently said that he plans to pursue a career in music and forgo returning to college to finish his degree.

OK ... So you get onto and booted off American Idol and you get honored and get the Key to the City? I think there's many other more deserving people in Chapel Hill and within the University system ... Like our first responders and doctors who save lives daily. What a mess our society has become that we honor somebody who got booted off a reality tv show. And we wonder why our kids priorities and morals are so screwed up???

If he's going into music whats his stage name going to be Anoop Doggy Dogg
