Somber services, beach fun mark Memorial Day weekend

Alongside the fun at the beach, the pool and the grill, somber events to honor America's war dead are taking place around North Carolina this Memorial Day weekend.

SPRING LAKE, N.C. — Alongside the fun at the beach, the pool and the grill, somber events to honor America's war dead are taking place around North Carolina this Memorial Day weekend.

Fort Bragg's 82nd Airborne Division Band highlighted a parade in Spring Lake Saturday, followed by a ceremony in Veteran's Park at Ruth and Main streets.

"An American Celebration" at 7 p.m. Sunday in Cary's Koka Booth Amphitheatre will feature the Triangle Wind Ensemble and a vocal ensemble performing popular and patriotic selections.

Highlights of the Memorial Day events on Monday include

  • a wreath laying at Veteran's Memorial on the North Carolina State Capitol grounds from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Hope Mills' annual Memorial Day ceremony at 4 p.m. at Municipal Park
  • a ceremony at Freedom Memorial Park in Fayetteville at 11 a.m.

The entertainment, too, continues throughout the weekend.

On Sunday, the Mayo Park Amphitheatre will host its annual Memorial Weekend Bluegrass Concert from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $5 per person.
