Garner, N.C. — When the nation finds out who will be named the next "American Idol" Wednesday night, Garner native Scotty McCreery will be there, passing a trophy to his successor.
McCreery, who has spent the past year on a whirlwind tour, performed "Please Remember Me" by Tim McGraw during Idol on FOX 50 Tuesday night.
He said he watches the show when he can and DVR's it when he can't, and that the contestants are doing well this season. Finalists Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips will be in for a roller coaster after the Idol crown is awarded, he said.
"Even while I was on the show, I never would have dreamed that post-Idol would be this way," he said. "Who could think that you'd be on tour with Brad Paisley and the awards shows and stuff?"
He said he's gotten to meet new people and do crazy things, but that the ride has been educational as well.
"It's been wild. I've learned a lot about myself. I've learned a lot about my family and the industry, so it's just been a big learning year for me," he said.
The "American Idol" finale airs Wednesday at 8 p.m. on FOX 50.
