RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Symphony will present "North Carolina Remembers 9/11" Sunday at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2011, terrorist attacks on the United States.

The hour-long program includes spoken word reflections and excerpts from Mozart's Requiem and Raleigh composer J. Mark Scearce's This Thread, based on a poem by Toni Morrison titled "The Dead of September 11."

North Carolina symphony music director Grant Llewellyn said that the music has the power to sooth, heal and inspire.

"I am very happy that the North Carolina Symphony is collaborating with so many other North Carolinians to recognize the tenth anniversary of 9/11," he said. "Music has the unique ability to bring people together, crossing all boundaries of culture and creed with ease."

Admission to the concert is free, but tickets are required. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis by calling North Carolina Symphony Audience Services at 919-733-2750, visiting its website or at the symphony box office.

The event begins at 7 p.m. and will be live on UNC-EX and WRAL.com. It will air on WRAL at 8 p.m. and will rebroadcast at 11 p.m. on UNC-TV.
