In 1974, an ex-Army officer in Fayetteville who loved books and reading realized he couldn’t afford to establish a library, so he did the second-best thing— he started a used bookstore! From modest beginnings that included Canada Dry Ginger Ale crates, buildings originally designed to function as chicken coops, and a building that the founder put together himself, Edward McKay Used Books & More has grown to four stores across North Carolina.
Used books were our beginning and are still a big part of our stores, but we also buy, sell, and trade a wide variety of other merchandise, including CDs, DVDs, vinyl records, electronics like iPods and eReaders, textbooks, audiobooks, video games, gifts, and more. We’re open seven days a week to buy, sell, and trade.
Our Raleigh store has always been in the Capital Boulevard area but has moved a couple of times. Now it’s settled into its current location at 3514 Capital Boulevard, across from Chuck E. Cheese. It’s a big store with over 10,000 square feet! The Raleigh store only has a couple of windows up front, so when you first pull into the parking lot you won’t get an idea of the store’s size. But walk right in — you’ll see the huge variety of books, movies, music, audiobooks, gifts, electronics, video games, and even vinyl records!
