Although the name is new, the people behind the restaurant have been with the business and a part of the Chapel Hill community for years. Chef Sera Cuni was hired as kitchen manager for Foster’s Market Chapel Hill in 2006 and two years later, was promoted to general manager. She and her partner, Susan White, purchased the market in January 2013. We’re proud of our history and plan to continue much of what Sara Foster started in 1998 when she opened this location as an expansion of her original restaurant in Durham.

Some changes you will see immediately, but the majority will roll out the first week in September. The Root Cellar menu will remain primarily intact, but our goal is to place even more emphasis on the cafe and the scratch-made food made right, right here everyday. So look for old favorites as well as a few new sandwiches, pizzas and other items. We’re most excited about the addition of blue plate lunch specials, dinner entrees and an expanded catering menu! But we promise, all the deliciousness that you love will still be served 7 days a week!

The food

The Root Cellar serves up incredible deliciousness in every bite. Our food philosophy is simple: Make and bake everything from scratch every day and strive to use the freshest ingredients from farmers right here in our own community. So when we say you can taste the difference, we mean it. All of your favorites – from the decadent Root Cellar Mac & Cheese to the savory BLT Chicken Caesar Wrap to the mouthwatering Key Lime Pie and Coconut Cake – every morsel of our menu is freshly prepared just for you.

The market

Our market celebrates all the little things we love about specialty foods, such as hand-crafted melt-in-your-mouth chocolates; pickles to make you pucker; and chutneys even your grandmother would be proud to call her own. In fact, we’re pretty sure we have everything you need to please the finicky foodie in your life.
