The Selma Parks and Recreation department is organizing the Solar Eclipse "Get Mooned" Viewing party. To be held on the lawn at the Harrison Center for Active Aging on West Noble Street.
"It's important to have a large, flat area free of trees that is at least 170 feet above sea level for maximum eclipse viewing and Selma's Harrison Center for Active Aging fits that bill." Said P&R director, Joe Carter. "We will have no trouble watching this spectacular sight!" A total solar eclipse occurs when our moon aligns to completely cover the sun. Starting at approximately 2:33 p.m. Aug. 21, this spectacular event will occur. Selma, NC will be momentarily surrounded by almost total darkness, and the sun's corona will be visible.
People are encouraged to bring their own chairs and viewing glasses or devices. "You must protect your eyes from the damaging effects of the sun's rays and having a pair of "Eclipse Glasses" is imperative." Continued Joe. "Welders' masks work quite well in a solar eclipse situation if you have them, but regular sunglasses or a camera lens is not sufficient enough protection." Canopies and umbrellas will not be allowed on the viewing grounds, as this will hinder the viewing rights of others. "There is a certain level of etiquette needed for viewing parties of this nature. A lunar eclipse is the same-type situation, only that happens at night and people obviously wouldn't need sun protection for that." Carter goes on to say that if the heat is too much and you need to take a break from it, the Center for Active Aging doors will be open and you are welcome to sit a few minutes and cool off indoors while waiting for the eclipse.
The viewing party will get started at 1:30pm and continue until 3:30pm. Kona Ice of Johnston will be on hand for snow cones purchases. Drinks and snacks will be available for purchase as well. Music piped through speakers and games of cornhole, Jenga and Connect Four can be played outside while card games will be available inside. The photo booth with plenty of fun props will be set up for those that want to save the moment through pictures.
"After all, a party like this only happens once every 100 years and it deserves a PARTY!" concluded Joe.
