On May 20 & 21 and 27-29, Bartlett Theater will present Anya Reiss's adaptation of the Anton Chekhov classic The Seagull on the grounds of a Historic Durham home near Eno River State park. The lush, sprawling, country setting perfectly mirrors the country estate where the play takes place, as well as Chekhov's own country estate where he originally wrote this timeless classic. The play is staged at various locations throughout the property, and the audience will travel with the company of actors as the story unfolds.
Anya Reiss's adaptation is fresh and funny. Like Chekhov, Reiss's dissection of each character is almost clinical in it's precision. We see these characters through a lens which is equal parts compassionate and unforgiving. And as audience members, we laugh, because we recognize it as true. The audience will follow these characters over the course of several years as they stumble through their mundane lives in the hope of achieving something extraordinary.
So, we invite you to bring your own chair or a blanket (though both will be provided), bring a picnic dinner (local Durham favorite barbecue joint "Picnic" is right down the road) and enjoy a beautiful summer evening of theatre. All performances begin at 6:30 pm.
