The DOUGHMAN, known as the “self-propelled culinary tour of Durham,” is back for it’s ninth year. This year, the event will be taking place on 9th Street, in West Durham.

The race, known for being fun, outrageous, and not too serious, includes all of the elements of a triathlon - plus eating! Each team consists of four people - two runners, one biker, and one “swimmer.” The “swim event” takes the cake for most outrageous - this year it will require participants to splash around in kiddie pools set up in the Ninth Street parking lot.

Before each event, the athletes, often clad in costumes, will indulge in a delicious meal from a local Durham restaurant. Participating restaurants in this year’s DOUGHMAN include Dain’s place, Motto, Lucky’s Delicatessen , Beyu Caffe, Locopops, Cupcake Bar, Monuts, and Big Spoon Roasters. The race wraps up with the whole team eating dessert together and taking a victory lap before crossing the finish line holding hands.

While prizes will be handed out, the real winner of the DOUGHMAN is the Durham Bike Cooperative, this year’s non-profit beneficiary. Teams are encouraged to fundraise for the Bike Co-op in the weeks leading up to the race and are even awarded a head-start on race day if they meet certain fundraising thresholds.

Participants can register by visiting the DOUGHMAN website (www.doughman.org). There are only 100 team spots, so rally your friends, decide on a team name, and get signed up as soon as you can! The website also includes information on how to volunteer to help organizers put on DOUGHMAN.

If you are interested in being a spectator, there is plenty of fun in store for you, too. In addition to watching the antics of the race itself, the Durham Bike Co-op will have activities set up along Perry Street, and there will be food trucks stationed near the race area, in addition to all of the dining and shopping options you can always find on Ninth street.
