St. Barbara's Greek Festival 2017

Saturday, May 6 11am - 8pm
Sunday, May 7 11am - 8pm

Experience the fabulous flavors, sights and sounds of Greece on Saturday, May 6 and Sunday, May 7 at the DURHAM GREEK FESTIVAL. The event will be held 11am to 8pm, rain or shine, at St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, 8306 Highway 751 in Durham, one-half mile south of I-40 Exit 274 near Southpoint Mall. Admission is free. A portion of the Festival proceeds will benefit the Durham Rescue Mission.

The Festival will feature such favorite Greek foods as gyro (seasoned lamb and beef) and grilled chicken pita wraps, pork souvlaki, spanakopita (spinach and feta cheese filling in paper-thin phyllo dough) and pastitsio (layered pasta, ground beef and cheese, topped with creamy bechamel sauce). Enjoy savory lamb, slow-roasted on a spit (souvla), and traditional desserts like baklava (spiced nuts layered in phyllo with honey syrup), galactoboureko (custard-filled phyllo with honey syrup), kourambiedes (shortbread cookies dusted with powdered sugar), loukoumades (fried dough balls with syrup, cinnamon and walnuts) or an irresistible twist on a traditional favorite: baklava ice cream sundaes. Greek coffee and iced coffee frappe will be served at the Kafenion. The Taverna will feature Greek wine and beer.

Enjoy continuous Greek music and scheduled folkdance performances. The bouzouki band "Opa!" will perform live. All are welcome to join in community dancing. Also featured will be Greek cultural exhibits, video travelogues of Greece, tours of the landmark Byzantine-style domed church and a demonstration of traditional Byzantine iconography. New this year is a Silent Art Auction featuring fine art, ceramics and collectibles.

Try your luck at winning a grand raffle prize of $1000. Shop the Bakaliko grocery for olives, feta cheese, olive oil and delicious sweet tsoureki bread. Browse the Marketplace for gifts, handmade jewelry, crafts, souvenirs, Greek and Ukrainian imports, children's books, religious items and fine art featuring scenes of Greece. The award-winning St. Barbara community cookbook, THE GRECIAN PLATE, will be available for purchase. There will also be kids' activities and fun for the entire family. Remember - Greeks are famous for their hospitality!
