Best Sushi (Part 2)

Last September, the WRAL Out and About team searched the Triangle for the "best of the best” Sushi spots, but we quickly realized we would have to revisit this topic because if there is one thing the Triangle knows how to do, it is combine all things good in life and turn them into a sushi roll.

Last time, Sono, Waraji, Akashi, Haru and Tasu were crowned our Five Fave places to get this unique treat. Now, a few newcomers have made their way into our hearts (and bellies) to become worthy of the Five Faves title. Here are the latest places who wear the crown:

Sushi Nine (Raleigh)- Many people are skeptical about Sushi 9 being that it used to be a buffet and there were not many renovations done to the building when Sushi 9 moved in. However, with such a great location (right off Western Boulevard), I thought I would give it a try. What caught my eye when I first walked in were the specials: Sushi 9 has buy one roll, get one free, every day of the week. But you can’t judge a sushi place by its specials - with such a great deal I decided to order four rolls my first time so I could try a little bit of everything. Even though my stomach protested that I was full, I could not stop eating the sushi and ended up finishing the entire thing! The sushi was very fresh and there are so many rolls featured that I have not heard of. With fun names like “The Sexy Girl" and "Victoria's Secret” rolls, there is something new for every sushi lover to try.

Mizu (Raleigh)- I ventured out to Mizu at Wakefield Commons after I had heard rumors of a so called “sushi train.” I thought, “if there is such a thing, I have to try it out.” Mizu did not disappoint in many ways. The sushi was wonderful and the best part was how many rolls I got to try. They do in fact have a train that runs around the sushi bar with plates of sushi in the carts. Each plate has about four pieces on it and you know the price by the color of the plates. Plate prices range from $2-$5 so this is a fun way to try out a lot of different, delicious rolls for cheap.

Mura (Raleigh)- Located in North Hills, the atmosphere of Mura was what enticed me to give it a try. The inside is absolutely gorgeous and there is a wonderful patio where you can people watch as you enjoy some of the best rolls Raleigh has to offer. Mura has many one of a kind rolls and not only are they delicious, Mura makes a point to prepare them artistically so they look as good as they taste.

Oishii (Chapel Hill) - A friend of mine in Chapel Hill suggested Oishii to me as her favorite sushi spot in the Triangle, so I knew I had to make the trek to Chapel Hill to try it out. Oishii means “delicious” in Japanese and it definitely lives up to its name. The quality of the sushi is outstanding and whether you want a basic roll or a specialty roll, Oishii is all around delicious.

Yuri (Cary)- Yuri was suggested to me multiple times after the first Five Faves sushi, so I thought I would give it a try. If there is only one word to describe Yuri, it would be “fresh”. There are more than three dozen house special rolls available and they are some of the most creative rolls I have heard of. Though the house rolls are a little more expensive, they are worth it to try. If you are daring, try the Green Hulk roll (shrimp tempura, crab meat, inside; craw fish, avocado, baked wasabi cream on top) or the Cary Parkway roll (soft shell crab, eel, salmon, tuna, seaweed salad, spicy mayo and sweet sauce).
