Being from south Louisiana, I grew up eating fried pickles. In fact, pickles are a huge part of the cuisine down there. While living in Mississippi, I met people who even soaked their regular dill pickles in Kook-Aid before eating them. They didn't fry them after the soaking, but imagine how that would have turned out...
So for the pickle fans out there, we ranked our Five Favorite places to enjoy fried pickles.
Village Draft House (Raleigh) - Beer-battered and lightly salted, these pickle chips hit the spot. Served with ranch dressing, you can't eat just one.
Four Corners (Chapel Hill) - We had to put this place on the list because of its appetizer known as the "Julius Peppers." Named for the Nash County product who played both basketball and football at UNC, it is a heated, crunchy combination of fried pickles, banana peppers and jalapenos served with ranch dipping sauce.
Raleigh Times (Raleigh) - Their fried pickles are a little different. Instead of the tradition pickle chips, they served thinly sliced sandwich style spears lightly breaded and fried to perfection. They are served with a tasty garlic ranch dipping sauce.
Buffalo Bros. (Raleigh, Wake Forest) - While we normally go for the wings, we have to order some fried pickles as an appetizer when we visit. These lightly battered dill pickle chips are even available as a side item, if you don't want to order the full app.
Carolina Ale House (various locations) - Fried pickles are a traditional bar food that the Ale House excels in making. We usually get a burger and an appetizer of these golden fried pickle chips. Bonus points for the sauce, which is a horseradish-ranch blend.
