Belk previews fall fashion trends

Belk unveiled its Fall fashion this week with a virtual tour at Crabtree Valley Mall. This year’s styles are all about looking “polished.”

This year, designers everywhere are “looking back to look forward," Belk Vice President of Trend Merchandising and Fashion Director Arlene Goldstein said. Belk is no exception to this trend. Belk’s motto has always been “Modern.Southern.Style,” and they are definitely staying true to this statement.

Belk wants your clothes to work as hard as you do so this year enjoy pieces that can be mixed and matched and worn over and over again in different ways. Belk breaks their Fall trends down into style statements – My Fair Lady, Town and Country, Mod Modern and Vivid.

"My Fair Lady" is all about being super feminine and elegant. It is designed for the luxurious and grown-up woman. Lace, peplums, bows, Peter Pan collars and waist definition are the highlights for this girly-girl trend. The fabrics for this look include lush wools, silk, satin, lace and even sequins.

"My Fair Lady" is taking sequins from being a nighttime-only club trend to a look you can wear during the day, and even to work. Designers love everything that shimmers, and Goldstein agrees, “Why wait for nightfall to add a little pizzazz? Embrace that glitz before six!”

This elegant look is also not just all about black and white. Prints, powerful patterns and bold colors are what’s in this fall for every look. Single-soled pumps (low heels) and nude heels are also making a comeback. Grab a floppy hat, felt fedora, or anything with fur and you are sure to look "My Fair Lady" chic.

The next trend is "Town and County." It is basically a glamorous and polished weekend wardrobe. This look is all about pairing casual and dressy fabrics. An example is pairing silks with flannels or blazers with jeans. Worn leather is definitely in this season whether in the form of boots or a great handbag. Belted sweaters, oversized pockets and chunky knits are comfy as well as chic. Tweed is the most important fabric trend of the season and is a huge part of the "Town and Country" look. Patterns such as plaids, snake skin, floral and cheetah give this weekend look an edgy feel.

The next style statement, "Mod Modern," is all about being retro and embracing styles from the 1950s and 1960s. Shape-shift dresses with sleek lines and sharp tailoring are very in this season. Throw in color blocking, a-line shapes, geometric patterns and metal accessories and you will feel like you have traveled back in time – of course looking and feeling more fabulous and modern than ever. Grab a pair of ankle boots and platform pumps that have an architectural feel to tie your whole look together.

The last style trend, "Vivid," is all about color blocking and even color clashing. Goldstein joked that “a couple of years ago you would have drank poison before wearing stripes with plaids or an orange shirt with purple pants, but this is the look for the season and is very fresh and modern.” For those that are a little intimidated by the thought of color clashing, start small with a handbag or jewelry and work your way up. Either way, stock your wardrobe with bright colors and daring fabrics, and you will be looking "Vivid" in no time!

Check back later this week to find out Belk's Most wanted items for Fall for both men and women!
