Best Desserts: Your picks

When I set out to satiate the sweet tooth, I turned to the suggestions posted by readers on our first round of "Best Desserts." I loved tracking down (and tasting) your hidden gems!

Lisa in Cary recommended not only a venue but a dish – the Upside-down Apple Pie at McCormick & Schmick's. The spices caramelize to create a veneer underneath a warmed, gooey crust and tender, tart apples. The cinnamon ice cream accompaniement makes this sinfully rich but oh-so-right. Eat it hot for the best contrast of temperatures and textures.

Pear tartAnother reader, this one in Raleigh, likes the much more intimate setting of Hereghty Heavenly Delicious. The name is not an overstatement. Hereghty is a touch of France just off Glenwood Avenue, with chandeliers, strong coffee drinks, crepes both savory and sweet and macaroons by the dozen. The selection of tarts will make you feel virtuous even as you indulge.

In far north Raleigh, Ralph pointed me in the direction of Nantucket Grill, just off Durant Road. "Try them and Nantucket might just move onto the list," he wrote.

chocolate fudge cake And he was right! We ordered a half chocolate fudge cake for Father's Day that was big enough to feed a family reunion – dense, moist and delicious.

Nantucket also has locations in Durham and Chapel Hill, and I look forward to trying more of those cakes.

An Apex neighborhood spot was recommended by Christen. Namoli's New York Pizzeria makes desserts fresh in-house, and fills the cannoli fresh when you order. On the day I stopped by, the display case featured coconut cake, Mounds cake, and rhubarb strawberry chocolate cake. I chose the chocolate cake layered with mousse and enrobed in ganache. It was just right, not over-rich, and worth the trip.

No dessert list would be complete without a mention of the mile-high options that draw visitors to Hayes Barton Cafe & Dessertery. The selection changes daily, and just to survey the case is a treat. Each HUGE slice (they are not cheap!) is enough for two or even three, so plan to make dessert your meal at Hayes Barton.

Your turn: Tell us your favorite dessert spots in the Triangle in the comments section below.

cwood3: I miss the Darryl's restaurants too!! We loved their Adam and Eve's beef ribs..the best ever!! There is a Darryl's restaurant in Greensboro..not sure if it's the same or similar to the "old" Darryl's from "the day."

Try the Bailey's Irish Creme Chocolate mousse at Tir Na Nog Irish Pub in Raleigh. Yum.

If you love Flan, the absolute BEST I've had outside of south & central america is at Mama Nori's-Durham & Raleigh. I beleive it is made at the durham location and delivered to the Raleigh one. But as a flan lover-this is THE BEST. Not for everyone I know.

We just ate at a local CB on Sunday and I have to say that their "seasonal" blackberry cobbler with blackberry ice cream was to die for. You gotta try it especially if you love blackberries!

App St., I miss Darryl's period!! They had some of the best burgers!!

Agree about Clayton Steak House.

Bananas Foster at Winston's.

The best desserts I have had since moving to the area all came from the Clayton Steakhouse in Clayton. Yes, their steak is wonderful but their desserts are even better. They have a buttermilk pie that is to die for! They also have a blueberry pie with a pecan crust! Don't skip dessert at Clayton Steakhouse.

I wish Darryl's was still around....I LOVED their Cappuccino Cake!!

Savory's Cakes and Bakery on Salem St in Apex is outstanding. She has so many different things to choose from and reasonable prices too! I live in Lee Co., but any trip to Wake Co., always includes a stop there!
