Elizabeth Gardner's Beach Five Faves

WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner loves going to the beach! In fact, she just got back from a beach trip. Out and About asked Elizabeth for her Five Fave Beach picks. Check them out:

Best Restaurant: I love Provision Company in Southport. Seating is all on the waterfront deck and the seafood is just caught fresh.

Best Beach: Sunset Beach has the most gorgeous sand. The beach is very wide and the water is quite shallow for a long way out making for great swimming.

Best Bike ride: The best beach bike riding is at Bald Head Island. There are no cars on the island, only golf carts and bicycles. The development blends with the landscape and the bike rides are wonderful!

Best beach sport: Stand up paddleboarding. We have so many great creeks and sounds at our beaches in NC. Those are great places for the up and coming sport of sup. It’s a great core workout.

Best beach party: At every full moon there’s a party at east beach on Bald Head Island. The Maritime Market brings free food to the “Howl at the Moon Party." As the sun sets over the dunes and the moon rises over the ocean every one howls by the bonfire. They really do. (The next Howl at the Moon party is June 4 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Beach Access 39, according to Bald Head's official blog.)

Provision is OVERRATED. If i wanted to go to the fridge and grab my own beer I'd have stayed in my garage. I'll give you their Onion Rings and Steamed Shrimp were good. Their Crab Cake was beyond terrible.

Don't tell anyone about Sunset Beach either. Best kept secret on the coast. I know folks who live in Wilmington close enough to walk across the bridge to Wrightsville Beach and they drive to Sunset Beach when they want to walk on the sand.

We used to love Ships Chandler, but unfortunately it closed. Will check out Provision Co. next time!

LOVE LOVE LOVE Provisions! They are the nicest people. Rented that 3story house beside Provisions once & that was the coolest thing... with Provisions on one side & American Fish Co on the other side!

Sunset Beach will always have a favorable spot in my heart. I remember when you had to wait for low tide and wade across a channel to get to Bird Island. And the long, flat beach was the best. Any beach that pumps that gravel from offshore to replenish the sand is low on my favorites list.

Love Provision Co.!! Freshest seafood, great atmosphere, and beer on the honor system...what more could you ask for?!

And bar the they opened a couple of years ago about 15ft away from Provisions, The Great American Fish Co, is a fantastic beach bar with cold beer and amazing water views as far as you can see. And you can bring your dog!
