Ham & Yam fest starts Friday

Posted May 2, 2012

From free concerts to a "piglet stampede," the Ham & Yam Festival in downtown Smithfield will provide a weekend of entertainment.

Here are a few of the highlights of the two-day festival, which starts Friday.

  • Friday and Saturday - For the "What's That Yam Thing?" contest people decorate a sweet potato like a person, animal or thing. There are three competitive age divisions: under 5, 5 to 8 years old and 9 to 12 years old. There is a just for fun category for people 13 years old to adult for display purposes only.
  • Friday at 8:30 p.m. - Free concert by Molly Hatchet at Stevens Sausage Pavilion
  • Saturday - 5K Hog Trot and Piglet Stampede Fun Run - The Piglet Stampede 1 mile fun run is at 1 p.m. and costs $10 per person. The competitive 5K starts at 3:30 p.m. and costs $20 per person.
  • Saturday 7 p.m. - Rubber Duck Race - These aren't your typical rubber ducks. These pig mask wearing ducks are helping to raise money to fight cancer. Before and during the festival, 1,000 rubber ducks will sold. On Saturday night, the ducks will be dropped in the Neuse River at Smithfield Town Commons. The first duck to cross the finish line wins its owner $500. The second place finisher gets $250, with third place getting $100. All proceeds from duck sales will benefit the Johnston County Relay for Life.
  • Saturday at 8:30 p.m. - Free concert by The Lost Trailers at Stevens Sausage Pavilion

My wife and I went to that several years ago. There were no hams and no yams. Lots of cigarettes smoke and gnats though
