'Mystery Boxes' pop up in the Triangle

Published: 2012-03-25 18:13:00
Updated: 2012-03-26 09:43:38

Have you seen these boxes around the Triangle?

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences began putting these "Mystery Boxes" around the area on Sunday to help promote an after-party for the opening of its new Nature Research Center.

From Sunday through Friday, museum staff and volunteers are putting out 500 of these boxes across Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill and Research Triangle Park. Each box contains a QR code on the inside lid. Scan the code using your smart-phone and find out your prize. You could win discounts at the museum store, $10 off at area restaurants or tickets to the NRC Gala After Party on Friday, April 13 from 10  p.m. to 1 a.m.

Party-goers will get a sneak peek of the Nature Research Center, which holds its 24-hour grand opening on Friday, April 20. The center will include hands-on research opportunities for visitors, a WRAL Weather studio and prediction center where you can create your own forecast models.

These Mystery Boxes can be anywhere – on the street, a park bench, in a restaurant or a bus. To get clues and find out when a new box has been placed, follow the NRC Grand Opening Twitter account.

One more cool thing about the boxes: there is a band around them made out of seed paper that you can keep as a memento or plant in your garden and watch grow into a wildflower.

Come to think of it, I just saw some guys in brown uniforms dropping boxes all around town - even at peoples' houses! I think they say "amazon" on them.

Alert the authorities.

Littering - bait for terrorist activity - unnecessary cause for alarm - exactly what we've been asked to REPORT to authorities! - Come on, folks... You all who keep saying, "go learn something new, stop with the paranoia".. why don't you consider the possibility that the museum made a DUMB decision..?

Fragment Four, I totally agree with you. It's on every dang news station and it's very obvious with the big red question mark.

jcthai, certainly hope these kinds of fears don't keep you from actually enjoying life!

My thing is this is just giving way for someone to copy cat these boxes but put something else in it. It is mean people out there that would do that. And you go up and open a box you think is safe and its really not.

They probably informed LE as to where they are leaving them also. I think people are getting worked up for no reason.

It looks like the post-911-conditioning is working well here.

People, the boxes are labeled and marked by the museum. Do yourselves a favor, and go learn something new today !

Who thought this was a good idea? It's our tax dollars at work! I guarantee the bomb squad will be contacted a lot this week!

Would never go over in UK or EU countries and probably not in larger cities of US as it's a perfect opportunity for terrorist to hide a bomb in plain sight. Wish it weren't so.

They are tell everyone on WRAL (the news) so people will not be afraid. So just enjoy the wonderful gift of life. Have fun and stop being so freaked out that ya miss the special things in life.

paranoia breeds from terror which I guess means the terrorists won---hope they didn't leave any of these at the airport---personally---people dressed in mascot outfits freak me out
