Andy's Burgers changes name to Highway 55

Posted March 5, 2012

Mount Olive-based chain Andy's Burgers Shakes & Fries has officially changed its name to Highway 55 Burgers Shakes & Fries, company officials said.

In a note on the company's website, officials say the concept and food at the restaurant will stay the same. The new signs should be up by the summer on all current locations and the new restaurants the chain plans to open across the southeast.

The name change helps the group with expanding outside of North Carolina. The Triangle Business Journal reported that Andy's Burgers founder and President Kenny Moore changed the name to avoid conflict over the trademark for the name "Andy's" outside of the state.

Andy's operates 100 restaurants throughout central and eastern North Carolina. It has also made our Five Faves list for best dessert for its frozen custard.

I like the new name change. Hwy 55 is a perfect name that reflects a well known highway and much traveled road in N. C. to and from our beaches and to border to border. The sign is very appealing, but I am curious how it will advertise the now famous best homemade style burgers Andy's is famous for. Also would like to say, the sign would look good at truck stops. Perhaps a good location for expanding future restaurants.

Why not leave the North Carolina name as is and use hwy 55 in other states

They had to do this in order to expand outside of NC. Apparently there is a copyright / trademark on the name "Andy's", so they had to change it in order to expand.

    What a shame.
