Best restaurant freebies

I love going to restaurants that give you just a little something to nibble on while you review the menu. Something that can take the place of an appetizer if you aren't looking for a big meal. These are some of our favorite restaurant freebies:

The Pit (Raleigh) - The hush-puppies and biscuits here are so good. They really get your mouth watering and ready for the great night of barbecue ahead.

Angus Barn (Raleigh) - This place has the ultimate freebies - homemade cheeses, freshly made crackers and a pickles and olives tray. I nearly fill up on all the great cheese before I get my meal.

Flying Biscuit (Raleigh) - They give you a free biscuit. And you get their apple butter to go on it. Seriously good stuff.

El Rodeo (Raleigh) - Gotta love their chips and salsa.

Mimis (Raleigh/Greensboro/Cary) / Outback Steakhouse (various) - I normally shy away from naming chains on this list, but I had to put them their based on the free bread you get at each place. Mimis offers a collection of breads including carrot and raisin. And Outback is known for its fresh honey wheat bread.

Honorable mentions: Machupicchu Peruvian Cuisine (Raleigh) for its canchas (toasted corn kernels) and Winston's Grille (Raleigh) for its blueberry muffins during brunch.

So, there are probably a few freebies I missed. Let me know your picks in the comments sections below.

I've lived here since '02 and I used to go to Bill Ellis' to eat barbecue. Now I go to Parker's where the service is MUCH better, along with the food, and you get more than enough on your plate and it doesn't even cost you $10. I will always be a fan of Parker's.

Also like The Peddler off of Glenwood Avenue and The Steakmastor in Wilson. Both places have GREAT FRESH salads!! :>)

Love,love,love Winston's Grille!

I gotta second the biscuits at the NC Farmers Market. They are delicious. I could make a meal out of those biscuits and a couple strips of bacon.

@RB Drinking Spirits Woman....This is an article about free food at restaurants, not free food at just high-end restaurants…get a grip on yourself.

Ya'll are making me hungry! I will definitely go and visit some of these places for a follow-up piece.

The Flying Biscuit is a chain as well. Nat as many location as Outback but a chain.

Don't forget the hush puppies at the Sanitary Restaurant in Morehead City. . .and the cheese biscuits at Ruby Tuesday! Mildred F.

It may not be free but that WRAL Smart Shopper knows a deal when she says it. Take the all you can eat deluxe buffet for $1.99 at CiCi's Pizza she bragged about last week. $1.99 for all the CiCis Pizza you can eat!!?? Who needs free when you can get a deal like that?
