Trend alert: Nails that can take a shellacking

Getting a manicure wasn't something I usually liked to do. I got kind of bored sitting there, trying not to touch anything, fretting that the polish wasn't going to last more than a few days anyway. Then, I heard about a new nail polish called Shellac.

One day, about a year and a half ago, some friends were insisting that I give it a try. They said it didn't chip and that it lasted for over two weeks. I was skeptical that it was one of those "your mileage may vary" type claims and that, as a mom who digs in the sandbox with my bare hands, and forgoes those oh-so-fashionable yellow dishwashing gloves, I'd still destroy them. 

But I was impressed! After two weeks my nails were still shiny and smooth, with no chips! The only reason I wanted to take the polish off was because I could see too much new, unpolished nail growing out. Hint: Choosing a lighter, neutral shade of polish will help hide some of that regrowth. 

If you're thinking about giving it a try here's what to expect. The polish is formaldehyde and toluene free and comes in dozens of color choices. It's thin like traditional nail polish and is applied to your natural nail that's been shaped and cleaned. First a base coat, a color coat, and then top coat. The only difference between a shellac manicure and a traditional one is that each coat is cured and hardened for a minute or two under a UV lamp. The best part is that they're completely dry as soon as you're done. No more gently and gingerly fishing out your car keys and getting into your car! 

Despite my raves, there are a few cons. It costs a little more (starting at around $30) and takes a little more time to do and if you like to change your polish color frequently, perhaps to match a special occasion dress, then this product might not be for you. Also, because it's so durable, you have to go back to the salon have it professionally removed with a 10-minute acetone application.
