There is nothing more versatile than a sandwich! There are endless combinations of fillings that can be made hot or cold, eaten on the go with one hand or served open-faced and eaten with a knife and fork.
When you were in kindergarten you probably liked the crusts cut off, but if you're eating a roast beef sammie with au jus then the crustier, the better! There are breakfast sandwiches, tea sandwiches, humble peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and $200 sandwiches featuring black truffles and foie gras. Even the word “sandwich” is versatile, it’s a noun and a verb! Here are five of our favorite places to grab a sandwich:
Sunflowers Cafe (Raleigh)- For almost 30 years, Sunflowers has been serving great sandwiches to the Raleigh area through their café and catering business. It’s what they do best! Try the Californian with turkey and avocado on grilled wheat bread with romaine, tomato, havarti cheese and homemade ranch dressing. If you're coming for lunch be sure to bring cash or a check, they don't accept credit cards.
The Remedy Diner (Raleigh) - The Remedy Diner is popular for its seasonal menus and organic, locally sourced food that’s prepared from scratch every day. They offer lots of alternative variations to their menu items, such as vegan “mock” meats and gluten free bread. One of my favorites is the Veggie Reuben with marinated tempeh grilled on rye topped with avocado, sauerkraut, thousand island dressing, dill pickles and melted Swiss cheese.
Seaboard Cafe (Raleigh) –This little urban garden oasis is one of my favorite places to get lunch. Hidden inside of Logan’s Trading Company at Seaboard Station, I would say it’s a “secret spot” but the secret must be out, because they are always busy! The line moves quickly though and I’ve never had trouble getting a table. My favorite is the veggie sandwich on sunflower bread with cheddar & Swiss cheese layered with lettuce, onion, tomato, sprouts, mayo cucumber & pickle. Definitely be sure to order their pickled carrot sticks as a side.
The Rockford (Raleigh) – The Rockford is another “secret spot” that everyone knows about! It’s unassuming front door leads upstairs to a beautiful restaurant space with great light and local art. With almost 20 sandwich items on the menu, it's hard to choose just one. They’re famous for their “ABC sandwich” with green apples, crisp bacon, sharp cheddar cheese and toasted sesame honey dressing on French toasted whole wheat bread. Or try their version of the Blue Maxx with sliced turkey, herbed bleu cheese, crisp bacon, red onion and tomato on a grilled sub roll.
Café Carolina (Multiple Area Locations) – They’re most famous for their cupcakes with blue icing, of course, but Café Carolina is always a sure thing for good sandwiches and with lots of great locations including Cameron Village and Fayetteville Street it’s an easy choice for lunch. My favorite sandwich is the Turkey Berry Panini with smoked turkey, whole-berry cranberry sauce, Swiss cheese and coleslaw.
