Three weeks ago I was telling my roommate how downtown Raleigh desperately needed a good Indian restaurant.

The culinary Gods must've heard me because downtown will soon be home to not 1, but 2 Indian restaurants opening within 2 blocks of each other.  Let the battle begin!

The first to open, set for the middle of September, is Mantra.  Mantra Indian Cuisine & Bar is located at 116 N West St in the old Blue Martini/Vintage Lounge space.  (Second to open is Blue Mango, see previous post)

The latest concept from Gamer Rawat, Executive Chef at both Saffron Morrisville and Saffron Chapel Hill, will offer Indian Cuisine of both traditional and contemporary dishes made with the finest and freshest ingredients.

More about Gamer Rawat:

Gamer Rawat is critically acclaimed, world-renowned chef who has collected numerous accolades throughout his storied career.  With an impressive resume stretching from, India to New York, and eventually North Carolina, he has been known to push the envelope with his culinary skills. The American Culinary Association has ranked him as being an “outstanding achiever in the culinary arts”. His most recent award includes third place in the American Culinary Association's Triangle Division mystery ingredient competition.

Innovative Chef with an exceptional record of service and International experience at noted establishments as the Imperial New Delhi, Maurya Sheraton New Delhi, Holiday Inn Crown Plaza Bangkok, Radisson New Delhi, Master Chef at The Grand Ashok (Intercontinental) Bangalore, Master Chef of Tamarind New York, Executive Chef at both Saffron Morrisville and Saffron Chapel Hill, NC. Presently he is Executive Chef and Co-Owner of Mantra.

Welcome to downtown Chef Rawat!  I'm looking forward to having Indian cuisine within walking distance...or maybe you'd be up for delivery?

Great! So if Mantra is the first, what's the second Indian restaurant that's coming?
