What is the Internet?!

Posted February 2, 2011

Here's a cute clip from "The Today Show" in 1994, when Bryant Gumbel and Katie Couric are puzzled over this new Internet thing.

Yeah, I miss those days. I had been on the net for a while in 1994 ... it was more like a private club. I was a newsgroup moderator in 1994 and remember the first time somebody spammed the moderated newsgroups and all these other old-timers said, see? We told you this would happen one day ... and pretty soon it will spread to email too!
Now if we could just retrofit gopher into twitter the circle would be complete. If you didn't know what the internet was yourself in 1994, you probably don't know what gopher is -- it was a text-based precursor to the world wide web -- and it was incredibly fast -- miss it sometimes as I wait for java apps to load.

I saw this video on Kim Komando's web site - the digital goddess. Pretty cool looking back on these things.
