Oh, those clichés

Posted November 5, 2010

You hear them.  You say them.  But do you ever think about the origins of your favorite clichés?

It's a dog eat dog world out there, and in the world of language, it's all about survival of the fittest.  I know leaning on the crutch of a cliché is a lot easier than coming up with an original way to say something, but when the rubber meets the road at the end of the day, the bottom falls out sometimes, and you just have to grin and bear it.

Life has a gallery of cliché origins here.

Brian, what happened to the bigfoot story? I saw you refer to it on the noon news but never saw a link come up.

The best use of that first one was a line by Norm from the TV comedy Cheers: "It's a dog eat dog world out there and I'm wearing Milkbone underwear."

Just remember that a cliche in the hand is worth two uhs in the bush
