A long wait at a railroad crossing

Posted February 22, 2010

There is a railroad crossing near my house, and as long as I'm not in a hurry, I enjoy watching the train go by.  I don't know if I would enjoy waiting for this train to go by -- a 3.5-mile-long freight train that Union Pacific is testing.  Popular Mechanics has details and a (5-minute-long!) video of the train going by.

Darn, I missed my dental appointment.

I was surprised this whole thing passed in just under 5 minutes. The big waits come when long trains have to switch to side tracks. The article said something about these monsters not being able to use the side tracks.

At 4:45 am Sunday morning, I waited at a crossing, in the not so good part of Wilson, after leaving the hospital with my grandson. I waited about 12 minutes. It was miserably long and slow. That was about all I could take!
