After watching this season of "Survivor," I can honestly say that the jury got it right last night when they picked Natalie White as the winner of the $1 million prize.
Some argued that millionaire Russell Hantz played the game much better. He did find immunity idols with no clues and masterminded a lot of the eliminations. But what Russell forgot was the key to winning to the show is getting enough jury votes at the end.
Russell bullied everyone, controlled the game and will go down as one of the most hated players in the history of the show. But he neglected to think about the jury – a group of people he lied to and manipulated to get to the end.
Natalie had the best strategy. She flew under the radar by aligning herself with the biggest bully in the game. She saw early on that strong women were the first to be eliminated, so she avoided showing any strength.
In the end, Natalie had the best strategy – align yourself with the most hated player and beat him in the end because the jury hates him more than you. It has been a strategy used many times on reality TV, but doesn't always work. At least for Natalie, it did.
Russell also claims to be a nice guy in real life. On the show, he poured out his team's water and burned their socks. He had a chance to show what kind of person he is off of the island last night. He acted like a sore loser – offering to buy the title of "Survivor" from Natalie and yelling at Jaison. He even brought more socks to burn.
I think Jaison said it best last night when he noted that everyone has a "Russell" in their lives. In real life, we root against our Russells so why should we root for him on the show?
Some people are saying the jury got it wrong. We as viewers only get to see some of what happens on the island. The jury has seen a lot more, so they are the best qualified to make the decision on who wins. After suffering on that island, they deserve to make that decision.
So do you agree with Natalie winning? I know my good friend Tom Suiter was pulling for Russell.

I don't buy Natalie's strategy claim. If she had said up front that her strategy was to align herself with stronger players, then I'd buy it, but I think she threw that out there because she knew she had no other argument for winning the game (and as Russell pointed out, she hadn't really thought through what she would say to the jury just hours before tribal). She was aligned with Russell by default because she was on the Foa Foa tribe, and Russell masterminded every move that allowed the former Foa Foa to survive to the end after the merge. Had Natalie been on Galu, she would've been picked off like the rest of them.
I WAS disappointed in the way Russell acted once he won immunity...but he still deserved to win, regardless.
(And...btw...I always love it when someone posts "Who cares?"...why are you reading and posting in a thread if you don't care?)
