Amazing architecture

Posted September 3, 2009

Web Urbanist has a compilation of 136 examples of amazing architecture.

With this little cool snap, I've been thinking about Denver this week.  That beautiful city has two great examples of unusual architecture -- the peaks atop a terminal at the Denver International Airport and the Denver Museum of Art.  Of course, we have good ol' Dorton Arena here in Raleigh to tickle your architectural imagination.

What's your favorite piece of architecture?

    Versailles Palace just outside Paris.
Something about the blue hipped roofs and limestone exterior details is just... perfect. After seeing Versailles, I decided not to ever visit the Biltmore house again - there's no need.

Don't over look the Dorton Arena. In it's day, it was a marvel of engineering-cantilever roof, no interior pillars to block the view.

(only drawback is acoustics suffered mightily)

Right now, it's the Art Gallery of Ontario located in Toronto. A recent renovation and addition was designed and built by Frank Gehry complete with a corkscrew staircase and a large space at the front that has tall timber beams and glass. Very beautiful building.
