From 1790 to 1870, patent law required inventors to submit a physical model of their idea.  Dozens of the models are on display at Harvard right now.  Wired magazine has a gallery of some of those models.

    Good point. Some of those models really are impressive.

    It makes one wonder if the inventors themselves made their models or if there was a side-industry of professional model makers. Some obviously look just knocked out, but some look quite professionally crafted.
