‘Tropic Thunder’ boycott?

Several mental disability groups are caling for a boycott of the new film “Tropic Thunder” because of its excessive use of the word “retard” and other questionable content.

Representatives for these groups screened the film – which comes out this week – and found it to be offensive.

I was planning to see the film until now.

Do boycotts by advocacy groups affect whether you see a movie or not?

Normally, I am not affected by a boycott but this one made me think. I find humor at the expense of the mentally disabled to be sick.

Has the boycott affected your opinion on the movie?

My husband was already planning to boycott the film due to his intense dislike for Jack Black! LOL

Weigh in with your thoughts below.

I wouldn't boycott "Tropic Thunder". IMO, it's not humor intended to make fun of mentally challenged folks. What about the white actor portraying a black man in the movie? I'm sure that offends somebody too.

There was a day when it was okay to call someone retarded, because that's what being mentally challenged was called. Now, we have to play on words so that no one is offend.

In school, we used to have "Special Ed" for the "slow" kids. Now I believe they're called "gifted and talented" or "exceptional". I thought those were the smart kids.

I didn't watch "Brokeback Mountain". I didn't boycott it. Gay cowboys aren't my idea of entertainment.

If you don't like the movie or what it portrays, don't pay to see it.

It all depends on the context. My understanding is that this is a movie about 3 shallow, baffoon-like movie stars--and that everything they say and do is intended to be mocked and laughed at by the audience. If a laughable idiot calling someone a "retard" offends you--then you have completely missed the point.

However, if an admirable and respectable character frequently uses the word "retard", then you would have a legitimate reason to boycott.

I haven't seen the movie, but something tells me that these boycotters are missing the point.

Great point about the Robert Downey Jr.'s character in the film wearing makeup to appear black. I think it all comes down to the "Politically Correct" world we live in and how PC we want it to be.

It must be tough to be so fragile that a single word spoken by someone that means nothing to you can hurt.

We're just way too easily offended these days.

I'm boycotting the movie simply because it looks like a terrible movie. I do not laugh at that kind of mess.

If someone doesn't want to see a particular movie, then don't go. But, don't tell me what to do.

I want to see it for Robert Downey's portrayal of a black actor. That looks hysterical!

I would not participate in any boycott that's driven by 'sensitivity' issues or the use of a word like 'retard'. That's trivial stuff. I'm bald as a cueball - let's boycott movies or products that poke fun at bald guys? I'm blind as a bat without my eyeglasses - let's boycott movies and products that make fun of people that have bad eyesight. People just need to get over themselves and not be so serious. Really.

Plenty of kleenex sold at the local FoodLion for all the crybabies out there.

To be PC or not to be PC, that is the question. Get over it there are a lot worse things in this world to worry about.
