At Least You Don't Live There...

Posted April 14, 2008

Looking at Google Earth, I don't see too many big residential areas at either end of the runways at RDU.  Certainly, some people see some low-flying airliners out there, but it's nothing like this neighborhood near the Kai Tac airport in Hong Kong.

As an Flight Simulator-flying aviation geek, I think I'd enjoy living there -- well, for a while, at least.  I don't know if the loud aircraft would be a conversation-starter or a conversation-killer.

I'll be sitting on the deck of one of my favorite bars in the world in three weeks, the Sunset Beach Bar in St. Maarten watching planes come and go. SSBB is adjacent to the infamous Runway 9 at Princess Juliana International Airport, the shortest runway in the world handling 747s and Airbus 380's. Take a look:

I might like living there too for just a few days. I live near Umstead Park, so I get to see jets all the time, just not like that!

Um, Brian, the footage you are looking at is at least a decade old. Kai Tak Airport (that's "Tak", not "Tac", BTW) closed in 1998, so the neighborhoods depicted in the video are no longer subjected to that kind of air traffic. See for more details about Kai Tak and its current redevelopment plans.
