February Games Momentum Continues

Traditionally, videogames have been recession proof. While people are cutting back on travel and other expenditures, entertainment is something that's always welcome. And you can't get more entertainment for your dollar than a videogame. Total game hardware, software and accessory sales topped $1.33 billion last month, according to the NPD Group.

For the month of February, overall videogame software dollar growth was up 47 percent over last February (when the economy was in much better shape) to $668.7 million. Hot new games like Capcom's Devil May Cry 4 (529,000 copies across Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3) and Microsoft's Xbox 360 exclusive Lost Odyssey (204,000 copies sold) did well, but it was older games from 2007 that continued to rake in the dough. Seven of the Top 10 games of February were released last year, including Rock Band, Guitar Hero 3 and Call of Duty 4.

On the hardware front, sales were up 19 percent to $480 million. Nintendo continued to dominate with the Wii and Nintendo DS, the top-two selling platforms during the month with 585,000 units and 430,000 units, respectively. The PS2 continues to show its resiliency, even in its 9th year, taking the number 3 spot with 351,000 units, followed by the PS3 with 276,000 units. While some may focus on the fact the PS3 appeared to outsell the Xbox 360 (254,000 units) in February, analyst Ben Schachter pointed out that Microsoft has had supply issues with its hardware post-Christmas.

Accesories also had a good month with a $185.3 million take, up 36 percent, thanks to all of those Wii controllers and Guitar Hero and Rock Band guitars.

Here's the Top 10 Games of February (ranked by units) as provided by NPD:

1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - Xbox 360 – Activision – 296.2K*
2. Devil May Cry 4 - Xbox 360 – Capcom – 295.2K*
