X-Wing Disaster

Posted October 15, 2007

It was going to be a red-letter day in model rocketry and Star Wars fandom -- a big, X-Wing model rocket launch!

It happened October 6 in California at Plaster Blaster 2007, a model rocketry festival.  The big attraction, an X-Wing model rocket launch, didn't got exactly as planned.  Click to watch.

ALERT!  About 20 seconds into the clip, someone over a speaker utters a a little profanity.  So I'm giving this one a PG rating for one (1) dirty word.  Otherwise, it has the Brian Shrader Clean Living Seal of Approval.

The X-Wing design is inherently unstable for model rocketry...

When I was in 6th grade, we had 'hobby day' and several of the guys in the class did rocketry. Every few weeks, we'd troop outside for their launches. The day we launched the one kids X-Wing, it went up about 20 ft, performed a near perfect immelman and leveled off at about 10 ft going straight over our heads...

The teachers eyes were the size of pie plates... That wasn't our last rocket launch, but we never did launch any of the 'odd designs' after that...

If you look elsewhere on youtube, someone modified the video to include a TIE fighter swooping in at just the right moment and blasting the X-wing to bits. Very clever editing, in my opinion.
