We're Giving Away Free Azaleas!*

Posted September 5, 2007

*...to non-profit groups!

If you've been out to visit our gardens here at WRAL, you know that we've got a green thumb.

WRAL and our parent company, Capitol Broadcasting, have a long tradition of giving away thousands of azaleas to non-profit groups around the area. This year marks our 22nd Annual Azalea Celebration.

Our company property manager, Tim Grissom, talked with me today about the giveaway. The response rate has been a little low this year -- maybe it's the drought? So, there's a great chance that your non-profit group can get a bunch of free azaleas from us!

One little thing -- you need to act fast. The application needs to be postmarked by Wednesday, September 12. You can download it here.

Get more information about the WRAL Gardens here. They're free and open to the public year-round from dawn until dusk. The gardens are located behind our studios on Western Boulevard. The Web site has more details and directions. We'd love to see you!

You can spray your azaleas and hostas with a mixture of water and eggs. Deer hate eggs. You will need to reapply after it rains.

Maybe the applications are low because azaleas are nothing more than deer grub in NC now that all their natural areas have subdivisions sitting on them. I think deer eat hosta and chase it with alittle azalea before looking for drink. Good luck with the give away :)
