The YouTube Debate

Posted July 26, 2007

I know this is a few days old, but that I'm writing about it now probably indicates the impact it had on me.

Did you watch the much-heralded YouTube debate on CNN this week?  What did you think?

I believe "mixed reviews" is a good way to describe the reaction.  Some think the questions were unexpected and fresh.    The question about meeting with the leader/dictators of Cuba, Venezuela, Syria, et al. has prompted a little dust-up between Obama and Clinton.

Others thought it was a prime example of style over substance, like the doomed snowman who posed question about global warming.  Certainly creative, but is it distracting?

Today, I read that Mitt Romney doesn't know if he'll participate in Republican YouTube debate, scheduled for September.

"I think the presidency ought to be held at a higher level than having to answer questions from a snowman," he said in an interview yesterday with the Manchester (N.H.) Union-Leader newspaper.

What do you think?

I think old Mitt entirely missed the point. Yeah, a snowman asking questions is a little over the top, but the person who asked the question is a voter. So essentially is Mitt saying that he shouldn't have to answer questions from voters?

I have to agree with you Milky. Most of what comes out of their mouths is BS and the Clintons are masters at telling the public what they want to hear. That's really an advantage Hilly has over Bama! Will be interesting to see what happens over the next few months. I do like to watch the debates on TV, sorry I missed this one. Even if it was playing on this site, would still miss it! :) It does give you a good sense of how they react under certain types of pressure, but certainly not an indicator on how they would run the country!

I think style over substance sums it up for me. I really don't even like television debates, or radio, for that matter. They are dog and pony shows and lead to "You're no Jack Kennedy" comebacks that have zilch to do with public policy, but can change the mind of a few hundred thousand voters.

Who's taller? Who has better hair? Who SOUNDS smarter? Look at how much time, money and effort our wannabe leaders put into this mess. I want to see the candidates put their plans and their policies in writing. Take your time, put it in writing and sign your name. I realize 90% of the voters probably won't read something that crucial to our Nation's survival, but I'm not conviced that 90% of us should be voting. Maybe we should swear in the snowman and get it over with.
