Poncho the Parrot Gets a Shower

Posted June 15, 2007

One of the big videos on Myspace this morning is of Pancho the parrot getting a shower.

I'm always a little skittish about showing some animal clips.  What looks like fun to one person can look like animal abuse to another person.  Luckily, my brother is a veterinary assistant, so he previews some of those videos to tell me if there's anything sketchy.

When I saw the parrot bathing, I thought it was peculiar -- mostly because of the noises the bird makes.  But I did some extensive research (I Googled "bathing parrot" and surveyed the first page) and determined that this is a proper way to bathe a parrot.  It's good for the parrot.  They apparently get itchy, dry skin.

So, there.  Enjoy!

what a happy video ! i have had a little myers parrot for 7 years and bird behavior is a special language. Poncho was doing head bobbing, face preening, and opening not only his wings but his feathers for more water. He is indeed a happy bird. thanks.

    Hi Brian,

I have owned parrots for over 20 years and believe me...this is a happy bird! Poncho is a Double Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot and you can tell by his display that he is loving every minute of his shower. He's holding out his wings so that he can get wet underneath. Regular showers or baths are essential to a bird's wellbeing and keeps their feathers in top condition.
