French game publisher Ubisoft is bringing Sony Pictures Animation June blockbuster, "Surf's Up," to all game consoles on May 22. Following in the footsteps of "Open Season," which Ubisoft also turned into a videogame last fall; "Surf's Up" is the first game that will actually feature the majority of the film's cast. Actors Jeff Bridges,Shia LaBeouf, Zooey Deschanel, Mario Cantone, Diedrich Bader, and Sal Masekela did original voice acting for the new game, which ships for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PSP, Xbox 360, Wii, GameCube, Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance and PC a few weeks before the June 8 movie release. The game also includes CGI clips from the film, which brings other actors on board, including Jon Heder and surfers Kelly Slater and Rob Machado.
The movie, which has already received huge buzz (something that didn't occur with "Open Season"), features surfing Penguins. Penguins have proven themselves at the box office with "March of the Penguins" and "Happy Feet." And the Midway Games "Happy Feet" game was a big success as well, thanks in part to the voice talent of Elijah Wood and Brittany Murphy.
Gamers can look forward to a quality game experience because Ubisoft's Montreal Studio, which worked on "Peter Jackson's King Kong" and the new "TMNT" movie game, have been developing "Surf's Up" in conjuntion with Sony for the past two years. There hasn't been a surfing videogame for several years. At one point, Ubisoft, Infogrames and Activision had competing Xbox surfing games--one of which starred Kelly Slater--but the sport never took like skateboarding did in game format. "Surf's Up" is likely to change that thanks to the CGI characters and advances in water effects. After watching the movie, it's likely there will be a large audience of various demographics that will want to catch a wave with a penguin.
