According to a new study by Scarborough Research, the Raleigh-Durham area is right on par with the national average when it comes to the percentage of homes with at least one videogame system. The national average is 24 percent and Raleigh-Durham came in with 25 percent. Slightly more people in the Greensborough/High Point/Salem area (26 percent) own game systems. Charlotte came in towards the low end of the spectrum with just 20 percent of consoles in homes.
Salt Lake City took the top honors with 32 percent of homes owning a game console, which was the highest in the nation. Lexington, Toledo and the Flint/Saginaw/Bay City area all came in second place with 30 percent of households owning a game console. The cities on the low end of the spectrum all are based in Florida, perhaps because residents there spend their free time at the beach. Florida also is home to a lot of senior citizens, which could skew the percentages. Only 15 percent of homes in Naples/Fort Myers have a game console and only 19 percent of households in Miami/Ft Lauderdale are plugged into games. Tampa/St Petersburg and West Palm Beach/Fort Pierce both came in with 20 percent of homes equipped for gaming.
According to this research, Wal-Mart is the number one place to buy a videogame. One-third of homes that have a game console have made some type of purchase at the retail chain. Also high among places to buy games and equipment was Best Buy (30 percent), Target (16 percent), Circuit City (15 percent) and Radio Shack (7 percent).
